Tactical Catholic: Easy Food Prep Idea
Last night I wrote about how important it was for us to take some small steps to prep. Today I am giving you a few ideas for easy food preps that anybody can do. If you’ll take a few bucks this week you can add some simple food preps that will help your family in the event of a power outage. These items are relatively inexpensive and have a good shelf life. What’s more, most of these things can be eaten as-is, just in case you aren’t set up with a camping stove or heating method.
Ramen Noodles – Get a big honking package of the noodle packages. All you need to enjoy this noodle soup is heated water. AND, you can take this from my college years. You can eat ramen noodles raw. They usually come in a case of 12 or 24. If you’ll stock 3pkg per person per day, you’ll have enough meals to make it a few days.
Canned Food – Most of these things have a long shelf life. Grab a few extra cans the next time you go to the store. Think of a can as a meal. As with the ramen, you can eat these right out of the package. My super mega pick for you is to grab the cans with the pop top lids – just in case you lose your can opener.
- Canned chicken
- Canned tuna
- Canned pasta
- Canned vegetables
- Canned Ready to eat soup
- Canned fruit
Bottled Water – Nobody thinks about water, but it should be your first priority. Grab it when it’s on sale. Everybody needs a gallon a day. So if you’re putting together a 3 day bug in supply, grab 3 gallons per person. You can buy them in gallon jugs and store branded for cheap. Keep one more thing in mind too, if you have food that requires water for preparation, you’ll need to add that to the water supply. Add some water for washing (yourself). If you’re smart you’ll reuse the wash water in the potty reservoir to flush.
Toilet Paper – Even in a bug in situation, you will still have to pee and poo. Nothing wrong with keeping a little extra TP around. Here’s some my top secret tip for power outage potty time.
- You’ll need additional water to flush so you’ll need some for waste. Try this. Get some extra water that is going to be used for washing. Collect the water in a tub and use that water to pour into the reservoir to flush the potty.
- If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If the power is out indefinitely, don’t waste water flushing urine.
- If it’s brown, flush it down. Don’t keep poo lingering around if you can help it.
SIMPLE SIMPLE preps, guys. You can get these together for $50 or so and have enough for a family for several days. Look at my earlier posts on couponing too and you can get this stuff even cheaper. Plus, you’re really not taking up that much space, and this is food you can cycle through. Eat some every now and then and replace it as you go. That way you’re cycling through your preps and nothing will spoil.
