Develop Hard Skills
Let’s face it, men. Most of us are trained in soft skills that won’t amount to much in SHTF situation like a power grid failure. Will your accounting skills keep your kids warm when there is no heat? Will you use your cold calling tactics to trap wild game for food?
The observable patterns of history, from which most generations never learn, indicate that our days of ease and security are numbered. Hey, it could be 200 years or it could be 2. The point is that it never hurts to have some skills beyond the bookish and electronic.
I am not the guy to teach. I am a student myself, but I have the good fortune of being raised with hunting, fishing, camping, orienteering, first aid, and basic survival skills. If you were not, I suggest befriending someone who was. We all need to learn. An amazing fact about our modern society is that we have tons of learning resources within easy reach.
Here are my suggestions for some skills you need.
- How to pitch a tent
- How to improvise a tent if you do not have one
- How to start a fire
- How to catch and clean fish
- How to catch and clean wild game
- How to grow food
- Basic carpentry
- Basic auto mechanics
- How to read a map
- How to use a compass
- First aid
- How to procure water
- How to purify water
