Keep Yourself Pure in Mind and Body
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.
This exhortation from St Paul comes after instructions to live in peace and to overcome anxiety through faith and thanksgiving. So lemme ask you, how is your brain these days?
Men, we are bombarded with things that are not true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, excellent or worthy of praise. The enemy wants us to see all the good things of God twisted and perverted, and he wants us to be accustomed to seeing them, desensitized to them. Before you know it, you aren’t even bothered by the sin around you. Guys, we gotta stay alert!
Sin keeps us from God and from being who we were created to be. It begins in our heads, gentlemen. What we think on, what we look at, what we hear, and how we process it all.
The most pervasive sin in our culture today is lust, evidenced in the cavalier attitudes toward human sexuality, pornography, sexual deviancy, and all sorts of sins against the dignity of the human person. Through lust and its connected vices we turn persons into objects to be used.
We cannot fall for this cheap and false substitute for total self-giving love. I am no statistician, but I have read enough studies to know that sexual crimes, human trafficking, abuse, assault, divorce, and even a general lack of true intimacy can be directly traced back to lust. People are hurt every day. We have to stand against the tide and see the reality and despair of sin.
I know the temptations are great and access to porn and racy images are everywhere, even in the way women and men have been conditioned to dress themselves. I know the shame and guilt men (and women) struggle with. It may seem hopeless, guys, but I am telling you that you can live free of lust.
I have a link on the sidebar for guys who are struggling with porn. Let me encourage you to check it out. Let me also remind you that you, me, and everyone else who reads this is NEVER so far gone that God won’t forgive us. Not only will He obliterate our sins, He will heal our hearts and begin to rebuild us, rebuild our families, rebuild our communities. Please please please go to confession. Receive God’s free gift of grace. Turn from sin. Be whole and find true and lasting fulfilment in Jesus Christ.
Like any other addiction, there is a fight. We can pray for one another. We can encourage each other. Let us work together as Christian men of all ages to rid our culture of sin and show the true joy that can be found in God and true love for one another.
Mary, our blessed mother, pray for us your sons. Pray for us like only a mother can. May our purity and devotion to our Lord be like the true and pure love you have for your Son.
